Sometimes when trying something new it gets really difficult to find enjoyment when you don’t know what the heck you’re doing. You don’t have any resources, and even if you did, you wouldn’t know how to use them. This applies to all kinds of things, but today we are focusing on Anime. Yo, I’m Happy Shinji and I’m here to help guide you with your early stage experience with anime.
1. Think About What Non-Anime Movie/Tv Genres You Like
A lot of times, we treat anime like it’s this different breed of media. We know what movies we like and what we enjoy on television, but with anime we don’t know where to start. Well, anime is just like all the other shows you watch, it’s just a different form of visual entertainment...treat it the same. For example, if you like mystery shows that deal with crime and investigation that aren’t anime, try applying that as part of your search for anime to watch. There are so many genres out there, you are bound to find something awesome that fits your liking!
2. Ignore the Stereotypes and Common Misconceptions
As anime continues to grow in popularity, common stereotypes and misconceptions are starting to fade away, but they are still out there. Don’t worry, these are just generalizations made by people who are ignorant. Anime has shows made for children, but it is not just for kids. There are tons of anime that adult related, adult content, very graphic, and for sure not meant for young eyes. Most anime have English dub. You don’t have to watch it in Japanese. Not every anime is meant to have tons of action and super natural fights.. Don’t let these generalizations stop you from finding a really great series.
Sometimes anime with a lot of episodes can be scary to watch because it might feel like a huge time commitment especially if you are super new. Try watching something short that’s maybe 12 or 13 episodes. If you find yourself wanting more, well then increase the episode count for the next series you try. Also, give movies a shot! Movies are a great way to enjoy anime content without having lots of time. A 12 episode series might run you 3 hours if you binge watch, where a movie will only take you an hour and a half or less. It’s an easier way to get into the content without worrying about how much time you have to watch the anime. Once you understand your taste palette, try going for longer series!
5. 3-5 Rule
This next one I call it the 3 to 5 rule.
Here’s why... In my opinion, it's very difficult to tell if a series is good or bad based on the first episode. It’s even more difficult when the length of the episode is only about 20-25 mins long. In my opinion, 1 episode is not enough judge the overall verdict of the show. Give yourself time and try a few out. By episode 3, you should be able to sense where it’s potentially headed for you, and by episode 5 you should have an understanding if it’s actually worth your time or not depending on the length of the series. Ask yourself these questions while watching.
1. Do I understand what is happening?
2. Do I like/not like the anime so far and why?
3. Do I have the energy for another episode?
If your answer is no for a majority of those questions by episode 3, 4, or 5, well then it’s probably a good idea to stop, drop it, and try something else.
Be careful: This works differently depending on how many episodes are in a series and if you’re watching it while it’s currently airing or when it’s completed. For example, the story might progress a little faster in a 12 episode series compared to a 24 episode series. 3 might be better for a 12 episode series while 5 might be better for a 24 episode series. Also, if you have a very long anime, say one that's continuing or 30 episodes or more, this could could mean increasing your 3 to 5, to a 5-7. Do whatever is comfortable for you, but I always suggest you give a show at least 3 episodes before creating a final verdict.
Don’t judge a book only by its cover which means don’t judge an anime only by its anime poster. Read the synopsis before making a decision! If it sounds cool, consider giving it a try! Also, read or watch reviews! It’s always great to get opinions from others. This could help sway you into watching or avoiding what could’ve been a time waster. Remember to get multiple opinions and not just one. Everyone has different taste so if you only rely on one source you’re limiting yourself. Don't believe the trends. Some people only say a series is over hype because it's the trendy opinion to have. Some people's opinions are formed based off what they've heard but never experienced. I would be mindful of their intentions and credibility.
Don’t rush to find something right away. Don’t worry about trying to finish a series in one night. Don’t worry if you don’t find a dope anime on the first try. It’s a new process, so give it time to build and work. Take your time looking and take your time watching. If you find anime is not for you, that’s okay! At least you tried it and experienced it. It took awhile before I became a huge fan like I am now. Most of the time, I wasn't allowing myself to enjoy it because I was afraid of what others would think. I learned to give myself time to get rid of that habit and to just enjoy it because that's how I feel.
