REVENGER COULD BE INTERESTING (Episode 1 REVIEW)

I think this anime in the end could be really good...or really bad...I'm not really sure, but here's hoping it's not the latter. Let's get into it!

This first episode is about a man named Usui Yuen who is investigating murders that are happening in a samurai clan. He comes across a man named Kurima Raizou, who is a survivor but also happens to be a skilled assassin himself. Thus, giving us a graphic plot of the two working together to uncover the deep truth behind these gruesome murders.

Now I have a prediction that Usui is going to be the most bad ass character. He gives off calm and collective with a mix of don't mess with me or you will most definitely find out type of energy. He has a very chill personality, but extremely perceptive and smart. We do get to see him in action towards the end, and I'm super curious what all he's capable of. Meanwhile, Kurima seems to be a little more slow to think and quick to act on his emotions compared to Usui. This is shown to us from the first conversation we get between the two characters when Usui starts asking some pretty valid questions. I'm hoping Kurima's character trait is used for growth and not just an annoying thing that gets in the way of plans and character development.

Props to the opening scene for this first episode. We start off with a gruesome assassination that is pretty graphic to watch. This show is most definitely not for kids and should not be treated as such. The graphic scenes were consistent this episode and I'm hoping it stays that way throughout the season. Bonus points if it gets even more explicit. I'd also like to add that it gives off a little bit of Samurai Champloo vibes when it comes to some of the fight scenes. It's not nearly as good, but there were some moments where I caught glimpses of it. Also, I felt like something was weirdly off about Revenger. It felt like something was missing and was keeping me from being fully immersed this episode. I'm not sure what it was, but when I find out I will for sure update you!

This was an interesting first episode, but I definitely could see some laziness in the animation. There were a good amount of scenes where it doesn't even look like the characters are fully drawn and it's just stills. This would work better if it was meant for comedic effect, but there's not much funny about this anime. Plus, those moments were during some serious scenes which brought the viewing experience down for me. However, there were some decent scenes so it does give me hope that the series animation could progress.

I also like the premise of the story. I mean Revenger is pretty self explanatory... it's about revenge... that's it. HOWEVER, I'm worried that the plot may get convoluted. We start off with a lot of information for this first episode. It makes me wonder how deep will things get and if the plot will start unraveling the further the series progresses. I would hate for clues and reveals to happen, but aren't adding up to the overall resolution especially because this show will definitely have some sort of twist.

Overall, I'm definitely gonna give Revenger a shot. I think it has potential to tell a great story and be entertaining. I enjoy revenge stories that also have a bit of mystery involved so I plan on keeping up with it for sure! It was definitely an entertaining first episode, but I do see lots of room for growth. Have you seen the first episode of Revenger? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for stopping by, peace!
